Just a couple of things...

Hi guys! I want to start thanking everyone for correcting my spelling/distraction mistakes. Then, I wanted to bring up a couple of unimportant things:

• Templates: I've seen people changes a valid wlink for a template. For instance (no offense intended) [[Argentina national football team|Argentina]] with {{nft|Argentina}}. Templates facilitate the writing of articles, but should only be considered preferable when they are ought to change (for instance, {{In Wikipedia}}, or some infobox where some data might be added). Templates have to be translated whenever a page is loaded, so it generates extra work to the servers. In short: used them as you please, but there's no need to change perfectly valid code favouring templates. In fact, {{test}} warnings to anon users should be used as {{subst:test}}, that replaces the template tag for the resulting text.

• Vandalism:
  • When editing, specially when modifying a number of pages rather mechanically, try to take the time to check for previous vandalism (I know its a lot of work, I don't do it always).
  • When revising your watchlist, not only check the last edit to the page, but the ones before until the time of your last loging (I think you all already do that).
  • If you detect some vandalism from an anon IP or a registered user, after cleaning it, check its recent contributions for vandalism in ages that are not checked so often.

• Wlinks: Avoid adding underscores to the names of the articles and images ([[Tango_(music)|tango]] or [[image:Salta_04_181.jpg|right|thumb|The inside of Salta's main cathedral]]

• It's mostly indie, but they did 3 covers for 3 various albums as well as their own, but Alejo is currently working on Glasnost, I suggest you check the link to the video of False at the end of the page, it's a pretty good song. Plus, it's not out of vanity since I'm the one who put it there, and I'm canadian. Alcoholemia was also released on Les artistes de la communauté on the label Retroforward. Location

There's a very interesting red-dot location system in use in Wikipedia, of which I gain knowledge only today. You can see how to implement it at the {{Infobox protected area}} template, as it can be seen used in the Arches National Park article. To use it, we should first create a Argentina locator blanck map (as there is a Image:US Locator Blank.svg). The question that arises is: should we have one single map of the entire country, or two or more zoomed maps. Together with the hiddenStructure CSS class, we could update the {{placebox-map}} and the {{placebox-begin}}. Mariano(t/c) 11:38, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

i dont like using CSS for hiding. Templates allow for if-else structures, I found it at Template:Language. I.e. we could use a template:Infobox Place instead of the splitted system. there was a fight about if-else and subtemplates (WP:AUM) but it turned out they are not a big problem for the servers and we can use them. Example: Here is are two examples of the location for Ushuaia.

I created the Image:Argentina - Situation map - Tierra del Fuego.png, Image:Argentina - Situation map - Santa Cruz.png, Image:Argentina - Situation map - Pampa y NorPatagonia.png and Image:Argentina - Situation map - Noroeste.png, Image:Argentina - Situation map - Mesopotamia y Santa Fe.png, Image:Argentina - Situation map - Chubut.png and Image:Argentina - Situation map - Buenos Aires.png, which I believe cover all the territory. This could be added to the existing template in place of the image (no need to change the template), or in a new template, 'city with locationg dot map'. Comments? PS: I noticed that the red dot's coordinates for a place are 5 pixels high and wide smaller than in the less specific circle's coordinate for the same place ( I mean, if Cordoba is in the X=10 and y=23 with the dot, it will be in x=15 and y=27 with the circle)Argentino (Talk cont.) 14:55, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

OK, so I created the {{Placebox-location}} template, but before we start using it we have to settle a couple of things:

1. The red dot is kinda big, do we wont a smaller one? a different one (shape, colour)?
2. Are we going to use named parameters? Currently it does, parameters base, x and y, but the other templates of the Placebox familly don't.
3. Is the name OK?
4. Everyone likes it?

Later maps (perhaps more detailed) can be added later, as far as they all have 251px of width, or with {{Superimpose}} outside the placebox infobox. Mariano(t/c) 10:41, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

Dirty War

Given the date, I started to work on this complex topic and was lost in categories. Every article on the Dirty War, the Proceso and their participants has a bunch of these, which I think should point to one Category:Dirty War and sister categories/subcategories. I believe we should draw a nice category tree where we can make our Videlas, Galtieris and Astizes fit without so much wordiness. Past discussion in Talk:Dirty War and a recent comment mention that "dirty war" is a common term in other places and that "our" article should be called Dirty War (Argentina). Now I'm all for preemptive disambiguation, but I haven't seen anything about the Dirty Wars of other LA countries. Is it presumptuous to guess that most people who look for "Dirty War" are in fact looking for the Argentine one? I'm bringing this up because the objection has been made and, if we have to move all links from one title to the other (tiring!), I don't want to have to do the same with the category too.

User WikiProject Argentina template

I'm writing you regarding the {{User WikiProject Argentina}} template, that many of us contributors use in our user pages. I believe it to have slowly degradated to something that doesn't represent the common ideo of the users that participate of this project. The last version by Darklegions (talk · contribs) reads:

• "The motto of the WPAR is Firmiter Unum Pro Patria, which translates to, "Firmly united for the Motherland". This motto reflects the desire to dramatically improve the quality and standards of Argentina-related articles on Wikipedia, and is a reference to the Argentine National Defense School."

I have no idea what does the National Defense School, or the Military of Argentina, have to do with the contributions to the Argentine related articles. It was pointed out that {{User uk wikipedian}} has a similar format, but I couldn't care less about it.

The purpose of this project is to contribute to Argentine related in general, and I see any connection with military out of place. You don't even need to be Argentine to participate, as contributor AntonioMartin (talk · contribs), so nationalist reference such as "Firmly united for the Motherland" seams to me out of place. I suggest we re.write the template to a more general profile; I wouln't use it as it is right now, because I don't feel represented by it. Mariano(t/c) 11:01, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

I don't remember being asked about, or voting for, or even being notified that we had a motto. Right now the template reads like a veritable fascist badge. I'd say we can leave mottos out (rather than wasting time in mottos, why not spend it in making articles?), and concentrate on the simple fact that we want Argentina-related articles to improve, stop. --Pablo D. América, Buenos Aires

Could someone check this, please? I've been transferring cities and towns in Buenos Aires to Category:Cities in Buenos Aires Province and tagging them with info from the Ministry of Interior (using {{ar-mi-muni}}). Now I don't doubt that this place exists, but the MoE says that the capital and only city in the Rivadavia Partido is Rivadavia itself, population 15,452. What exactly is América? --Pablo D. Hmmm... There must be a problem somewhere. "Denominación de categoría" is just what the administrative division is called; in Buenos Aires there is just one (all partidos are in the same category), but for example in Santa Fe there are "municipalidades de primera categoría" (pop > 200,000), "municipalidades de segunda categoría" (pop > 10,000) y "comunas". If you go down the page and look for the details on the partido, it gives a list of municipalities, and there's only one (Rivadavia itself). I think maybe the list is not complete or doesn't work well with Buenos Aires. <span class="maniac">There are several other "cities" that I haven't been able to find (for example, Cariló) and places that I think should be called suburbs (e. g. City Bell). My idea is to get the official information of the MoE on every city article, and coordinates too (http://www.maplandia.com/ has geodata on many places, even surprisingly small towns).</span> --Pablo D. Hi guys! I just wanted to tell you all that I'm glad we are having so many new 'not-just-another-lame-stub' articles lately. There are still a lot of topics to cover, specially in History and Geography. I know we already have a ToDo page, but it would be good to have a list of articles roughly ordered by priority, for these two separate topics. I'm afraid I have no atlas with me at the Cul d'mond, so I kindly ask you to take the time to gather that information.

At the same time, you might have read the message about the Wikipedia version 1.0. It will be hard to select the good articles, and those necessary, but we should do that some time soon. Hi Jorge! If you think there are enough military related Argentine articles to make a new template, take a look at Template:Argentina-stub to create Template:Argentina-mil-stub following the first one, then include in it the new Category:Argentina military stubs, and the already existing Category:Military stubs. Just bear in mind that there are a lot of users who take their time to delete stub categories that don't have enough articles, so I would recommend you to have at least 30 or 40. BTW: Don't forget that in English, unlike in Spanish, adjectives such as Argentine, Patagonia, Maradonian, etc., are always capitalized. Good wiking, Mariano(t/c) 05:46, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

New template

Well, I'm writing this but don't know if I should, maybe this is the wrong place. Anyway. People by origin

Can we just agree to a guideline on "labeling people by origin"? Am I the only one to resent the "Croatian encroachment" we had on Maradona and Luca Prodan? The basis for both claims was speculative; even if proven true, they'd had no relevance because the careers of both men had nothing to do, not even indirectly, to anything Croatian. I personally believe that such 'origins' should be labeled only when the partens are from that country, or at least when the person closelly identifies with that people (same counts for Jews). Mariano(t/c) 08:33, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

I just noticed this. I think it is only correct to categorise articles by notable facts. Someone's descent is often not a notable fact. I prefer to only include people if they are a) first generation immigrants, b) closely identified by themselves or society as that (any footballer nicknamed El Vasco for instance) or c) where the fact is important to society at large (e.g. where people from unusual backgrounds have achieved high office or status, or represent a notable community even if they themselves don't care - see unsourced comments on Jorge Capitanich). As a fan of categorising, I have probably strayed too far with the Basque category myself, but these are the criteria I'll try and stick to in future. This massive expansion of Category:Argentine people by ethnic or national origin is now getting troublesome. There are rarely references to the origin given, and there is confusion over the naming conventions. Only one or two editors are making all the changes, and I doubt that they are so knowledgeable about such a wide range of people - their edits are not restricted to Argentina by any means - and my hunch is that they are going by surnames, which is dangerous.

Argentina is a country whose modern history is dominated by immigration. In the English category hierarchy, any such categories are deleted fairly quickly as being irrelevant, POV and hard to source. I have explained above that I think they are relevant in an Argentine context given that many people maintain links and culture and identity from their ancestors. It is a notable fact about a politician, in my view, to be of close Arab ancestry, or of Chilean, given the countries' history. But even that use is subjective and POV on my part, so I am starting to reconsider whether these cats are of use. Martín (saying/doing) 09:05, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

Geography II: Partidos, Departaments and cities

I've been meaning to write about this for a while, and this seems a good time to do it... I think many of the "XYZ Partido" articles, especially the ones not yet written, should be merged with the articles about the corresponding cities. I mean, in most cases, a partido only has one city plus many minor towns, villages and other things not clearly distinguished in official sources. Since a partido is technically a municipality, shouldn't we redirect the partido articles to their head cities' articles when there's only one proper "city" in them? The same would be probably a good idea in the case of many provincial departments, especially those that are not very populous or notable -- when you go look for data on the head towns, their official websites speak about the departments as a whole. This is why, in my maniac tagging with placeboxes, in many cases I've chosen to leave the department name unwikilinked. --Pablo D. Flores (Talk) 00:29, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure about this. Big partidos, specially those in Gran Buenos Aires, have a number of important cities or localities inside (Vicente López). Others don't have the same name as its head city (Almirante Brown, La Matanza). Probably Partidos' articles will end up having little more than a list of localities, but I still think its worth keeping them separated from their head city. I would take the Lomas de Zamora Partido and Lomas de Zamora articles as a model, that don't have the same information, including the passage of Villa Fiorito from Lanús to Lomas. Article names

Does anybody know why several articles such Argentine Anticommunist Alliance and National Commission on the Disappearance of Persons have been moved (back) to their Spanish forms? Hello, I'm attempting to clean up some messes on WP and have come across one I'm hoping you may be able to help me with. Please see Argentine rock, reference # 40, which currently looks like this

Polimeni, Carlos (2000). Demasiado Artista. Sony Discos. ISBN 037628369424.

As I understand things, if this item has an ISBN, it is an invalid ISBN because it is too long. My hunch, though, is that Sony Discos produces sound recordings, so this item may not have an ISBN at all. Might you be more clever than me at figuring out what is going on here? I'd like to find either a valid ISBN that goes with this book, or better identifying information so if this is a CD or DVD or something an average reader would be able to locate the source. Y por eso escribo en castilla. En vez de aportar a los articulos, se la pasan agregando categorias que no le interesan a nadie (salvo a los editores) tipo articulos que les falta tal cosa, articulos con relleno de pavita, etc. Y agregan un monton de boxes a las paginas de talk, calificando a los articulos. Las calificaciones son mas POV que un discurso de Hugo Chavez. Por ejemplo, tengo para mi que los articulos sobre Balvanera y Carlos Bilardo son excelentes, y si alguien piensa lo contrario, que aporte. No entiendo tu reclamo, Pinchex. Si, por ejemplo, Balvanera esta calificado como Clase-B, es porque todavia no fue elejido como good article. Si crees que ese, u otro articulo, se merecen esa calificacion, proponelos como Good Articles, y luego subiles la calificacion. Si hay algun articulo que creas que se merece una calificacion distinta a la que tiene, CAMBIALA!. Los articulos cambian, y con ellos tambien su clasificacion.

De cualquier forma, no se porque le das tanto bola a esa calificacion si te parece que no tiene sentido. Caes en la incoherencia de decir que no tienen valor, y luego calentarte alegoricamente como si lo tuvieran.

Folks, I've just created WP:AR/ROS as a draft sub-project to deal with Rosario, which as you know is one of my favourite topics... This is after an informal proposal I launched at a meeting of the Flickr photographers' group Rosarigasinos. If you're interested, check it out. Wikiproject:Argentine football

Hi

I believe that we really need to sort something out for Argentine football, the coverage is really recentist, hardly any of the great players from before the 80s have articles. Also people keep adding and removing players from the current squads without using the players in and players out subheadings and adding seemingly made up players. The Argentine Primera is miles behind even League 2 (4th Level) in sunny England in terms of the number of players with articles and the quality of team articles. There has been discussion of forming Wikiproject:Argentine football. If I can get some support here i will try and set it up. If it does happen we can keep track of when squads have been updated, players needing articles, good online source material, Argentine players playing abroad, what needs to be done etc. Let me know if you're interested, Regards, King of the North East 22:43, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I used to trim down the list to the longest of either 120 articles or a month old articles.

Great you see you and Dnfenner are doing a great job with the Argentine related articles since some of the older contributors like me stopped actively contributing.

Article naming

Guys, I started a conversation regarding the naming of the article Re-establishment of British rule on the Falklands (1833), and would like to hear your oppinion on the posibility of renaming it to Surrender of the Falkland Islands of 1833 or something similar. Basically, I believe that the current title suggest the British restored some legitimate ruling, whereas a surrender would mean they had to be [temporarly] left behind by the Argentines against their will.
